Boulette Golden & Marin L.L.P. Partner Jason Boulette will be named in the 2016 edition of Best Lawyers in America, in the Employment Law – Management practice area. The Best Lawyers in America publication is a peer review guide to the legal profession worldwide, and this will be the tenth consecutive year Mr. Boulette is to be included in the list.
Boulette Golden & Marin L.L.P. Partner Michael D. Marin will moderate a panel entitled “Conducting Effective Internal Investigations: An In-House and Outside Counsel’s Perspective” at the 40th Annual National Convention of the Hispanic National Bar Association in Chicago on Thursday, September 3rd. The panel, eligible for CLE credit, will be presented as part of the Corporate and Business Law track.

The distinction between employees and independent contractors continues to be a hot topic. Recent commission and court rulings regarding “sharing economy” service providers such as Uber and Lyft have garnered much of the attention. Right here in Austin, the Texas Legislature has provided a subtle but meaningful tweak to its Family Code that has a direct impact on businesses and families all over the state.

On June 1, 2015, the Supreme Court issued its opinion in the closely watched case EEOC v. Abercrombie & Fitch Stores, Inc. involving a conflict between a neutral policy and a religious practice. Title VII forbids employment discrimination based on religion and requires accommodation of religious practices unless doing so would result in undue hardship for the employer.
Boulette Golden & Marin L.L.P. partner Laura Merritt was honored last night by the Austin Bar Association as an Outstanding Committee Chair for the 2014-15 bar year. Ms. Merritt was recognized for her work as co-chair of the Austin Bar Foundation’s annual Gala in January, which raised over $80,000 for the foundation’s charitable projects and grants, which support multiple regional family, veteran, education, arts and legal representation initiatives. Laura Merritt’s presentation, entitled “Coffee Shop Office Blues: Legal Issues for a Mobile Workforce” is scheduled for 1:50 pm and will cover the legal issues implicated by today’s co-working, power-commuting, remote office-using mobile workforce, including IP ownership, company property protection, confidentiality preservation, and wage and hour concerns.

The talk is scheduled for 10:30am on Wednesday, May 13th and will cover how to navigate the legal issues presented during unexpected challenges such as weather events, pandemics, and other emergencies.
